The city originally bore the name Hickory Town, but was renamed after the English city of Lancaster and their nick name the Red Rose City comes from the symbol for the English house of Lancaster. The city was part of the Penns Woods Charter and was planned by James Hamilton in the early 1730s. The city was first incorporated as a borough in 1742 and gained the rank of city when it was re-incorporated in 1818. The first paved road in the United States was the Philadelphia and Lancaster Turnpike, which is now part of U.S. Route 30. After the Revolutionary War the city became a main iron-foundry in the region. The city became known for two mainstays of frontier settlement life the Pennsylvania long rifle and the Constega wagon. In more recent history the city was among the winners of the 2000 All-America City awards. According to the 2010 United States Cenus Lancaster was home to 59,322 residents giving the city a population density of 8016.49 people per square mile. According to the 2000 United States Census the median household income in Lancaster was $29,770 and the median family income was $34,623. Today the economy rests upon several industries including tourism, manufacturing, healthcare, public administration and retail. The top five employers in the area are Lancaster General Hospital, RR Donnelley, the County of Lancaster, Armstrong World Industries and the School District of Lancaster.
